An unfortunate drawback to popcorn ceilings is the amount of work required to keep the surface area clean and fix any holes or cracks that may appear over time. Cobwebs, spiders, dust, and bits of dirt can easily get caught in the bumps, and smoke can eventually stain your ceiling, which can be difficult to remove. A duster or the brush head of your vacuum cleaner can help get rid of debris, but if you press too hard, raised particles of your ceiling may break and fall off, causing more aesthetic harm than good.

Should too many bumps fall off while cleaning, or if any holes form in your ceiling, it is time-consuming to repair them. First, you need to scrape off all the bumps surrounding the damaged section and sand it down so it is completely smooth before applying some drywall plaster, sanding again, and painting it over.

You cannot paint this type of ceiling with a regular brush! The stubble will fall off once it is wet, so you need a segmented foam roller to do the job. Alternatively, spray products such as Homax provide a popcorn texture, but whatever you end up using may not be consistent or match up with the original design. It’s best to consult with a popcorn ceiling expert for cleaning and repairs.

Water damage will also cause the textured appearance to come loose and peel off over time. Leaks will only harm your ceiling, as the stipple will become heavy, and eventually start to fall. Kitchens, bathrooms, and spaces where moisture is prevalent should have smooth ceilings to avoid these problems.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process

Step #1
Prep The Space

We clear furniture from the room if possible. If it's not feasible then furniture is moved to the center of the room and covered with plastic. All walls are masked off with plastic so that the texture being applied does not land walls and then require additional cleanup. Entry doors are masked off to keep dust from floating into other rooms. Floors are masked with paper. Wall light fixtures and hanging lights are masked with plastic. Typically electrical wall plats, baseboards, and wall or ceiling joists are protected by the masking plastic already attached to the walls against over spray.

Step #2
Smooth The Surface

After the room is prepped, the existing popcorn is literally scrapped off with a giant spatula looking tool. The popcorn is dampened with water and then slowly removed. We never know what's under the popcorn so there are times when divots or cracks may have to be spackled smooth. The goal at this step is to have as smooth a ceiling as possible.

Step #3
Apply primer to expose drywall

In order to have a uniform look after applying the new texture, it is critical to apply primer. Keep in mind that after the popcorn is removed there will be all kinds of seams and lines showing. If those seam lines are not primed they will bleed through after the knockdown is applied. The primer also serves as a glue to bind the new texture with the drywall.

Step #4
Splatter the surface

At this step, the painter will mix mud, pour the it into the hopper or machine, and then start systematically applying the joint compound to the ceiling. Once this starts, the painter does not stop until the entire sections are completed. once the texture has set for the proper time--about 15-20 minutes--then the high peaks are knocked down with the knockdown knife.

Is it better to spray or brush and roll when painting the exterior of a house ?

Brushing and rolling is more physically demanding than spraying. Due to the roller possibly skipping after in use for a while, it requires 2 coats for an even looking finish. Have you ever tried rolling paint on an interior wall? Then you know that you have to go back and cover up that first pass to get an even finish. Spraying allows for a more even application which makes the job move faster. Following manufacturer instructions on sprayer tip sizes, the proper thickness of paint can be applied without any worries. If working with a painting company that knows their craft, either process will work just fine. Keep in mind that a reputable painting company will stand behind their workmanship with a lengthy warranty period. That's what you are really seeking--peace of mind that the paint job will last. Anything below 5 years may not be worth the investment.
How long should an exterior paint job last?

It all depends on how much UV rays your house is exposed to and if you have proper water drainage. If you look at your house you will see that it fades unevenly. The back side may look worse than the front or vice-versa. You may also see around gutters serious discoloration and possibly wood rot. When selecting the grade of paint, it's important you select a grade that's going to hold up to the elements as long as possible. It may cost you a little more upfront but it will last longer on your house. Would you rather be painting every 5 years or every 8-10 years?

Primer should be used on: exposed bare wood when the existing paint is not sound metal siding or surfaces Think of primer as glue that bonds the surface being painted and the new paint.
How long does it take to complete an exterior house painting project?

Most exterior paint projects, depending on the size of the house, take about 4 days to complete. If there's wood rot repairs involved you need to add another 1-2 days. During winter months the temperatures should be hovering at about 40 degres when the paint is being applied and up 3 hours afterwards.
